The man once voted as the “most hated man in the NHL” is coming to Dallas, and he plans to bring a winning spirit with him. Sean Avery has been signed by the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League. Avery is considered the NHL’s best agitator; a player designed to get under the skin of opposing players.
The Stars made it to the Western Conference Finals last year and were just 2 wins from making the Stanley Cup Finals. Avery brings with him a big body and winning spirit that he plans to use to help push the Stars to another Stanley Cup.
One thing’s for sure, this coming season opposing teams wont get away with physical play so easily. Already fans of the Dallas Stars are looking forward to matchups between the Stars and Nashville Predators (due to the Jordan Tootoo issue last season) or the Detroit Red Wings (major rivalry issues there).
For the Dallas Stars, Christmas came early today when they found out their star center, Mike Ribeiro got off without a Suspension after his swing against Chris Osgood in game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.
Then again… the same could be said about the Detroit Red Wings. The swing that got so many people talking came directly after an extremely dangerous play by Chris Osgood that saw the butt end of his goalie stick “accidentally” collide with the face of Ribeiro.
“He actually tries to do it. It’s not like he accidentally hit me,” Ribeiro said, defending himself Sunday after not being around for postgame interviews. “He kind of was bent down, raised up and clipped me in the face.”

Both players ended up with fines, which given the alternative, is not so bad.
Going into game 3 later today, both teams will need to focus on their games. This applies more so to the Dallas Stars, so are trailing 2-0 in the series against a team that has shown itself to be bigger, faster and stronger after 2 games.
That’s not to say the Stars are smaller, slower or weaker however. In fact, the Stars have not been on their game in the first 2 games. Being at home for game 3 might be the wake up call the team needs.
It took 129 minutes to achieve, but the Dallas Stars finally eliminated the pesky San Jose Sharks from the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Brenden Morrow netted the puck 9:03 into the 4th overtime period to give the Stars their first Conference Finals appearance since 2000.
Marty Turco faced 61 shots in the epic battle, making him the 1st star of the game. Evgeni Nabokov of the Sharks was 2nd star and Brenden Morrow was 3rd.
The Dallas Stars now go on to face the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference finals.
Earlier tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins eliminated the New York Rangers, making way for an all Pen State EC final between the Penguins and Flyers.
The Dallas Stars tried again to eliminate the San Jose Sharks today, but failed to achieve the task as the Sharks rallied to win in overtime, 3-2.
Jere Lehtinen opened the scoring for the Stars. Brenden Morrow put the Stars up 2-0 going into the third period. The 2nd period saw not one, but two waved off goals by Brenden Morrow. In the third Milan Michalek and Brian Campbell evened the score, taking the game to overtime, where Joe Pavelski netted the game winner in the 2nd minute of OT.
“Every game we lose, we give them more life, but I like our position better than theirs,” Morrow said. “The third period was our downfall. We have to move on, earn our breaks. We earned this 3-2 lead.”

Try as they might, the Calgary Flames simply could not hold back the San Jose Sharks attack in todays game 7 matchup between the 2 teams. Jeremy Roenick scored back to back goals in the 2nd period, giving the Sharks a 3-2 lead. The Sharks went into the 3rd period with a 5-2 lead. Wayne Primeau and the Flames tried to mount a comeback and scored to bring the game to within 2 goals, but could not get the puck past Evgeni Nabakov. The game ended with the Sharks winning 5-2.
The Sharks will face the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference semi-finals.
Not since 2003 has a Stanley Cup champion made it through the first round of the playoffs the following year. That trend has continued today after a highly underestimated Dallas Stars routed the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 in Dallas, TX.
The victory in todays game 6 not only eliminated the defending Stanley Cup champions from the playoffs, but broke the “first round” curse that has plagued the Dallas Stars for 5 long painful years.
Marty Turco, who has taken the brunt of the criticism over the previous years showed that he is one of the elite netminders in the NHL, finishing the round with a GAA of 2.01, including a shutout in game 1.
Anaheim, who were one of the strongest teams going down the final stretch into the playoffs faltered under the constant Dallas Attack, and struggled to get past the Dallas Defensive group; a group that included 3 rookies and was missing Sergei Zubov and (for most games) Philippe Boucher.
“It’s disappointing because we believe we could do better,” said Anaheim defenseman Scott Niedermayer, the Conn Smythe winner as MVP of last year’s postseason who retired then decided to return to chase another Cup. “Our sights were set higher than this.”

Dallas now have a few days to relax before the Western Conference Semi-Finals begin. The Stars will face either the Colorado Avalanche or the San Jose Sharks in round 2, but wont know who until after game 7 between the Flames and Sharks on Tuesday evening.
Todays article by Ross McKeon of Yahoo! Sports is all about the Brad Richards trade to the Dallas Stars, and talks about how Richards shines during the post season. Richards fit into the Dallas system didn’t come easy however. After a career best 5pt game in his first appearance for the Stars, the star forward went the next 11 games with only a handful of points.
“It was a lot tougher than I ever imagined,” Richards said in preparation for Saturday’s Game 2 of a best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series the Stars lead over the Anaheim Ducks. “The last couple of weeks I wasn’t doing anything wrong but I wasn’t doing anything right either. I had clogged my head with too many things. It’s tough when you get traded and your new team loses. It’s a new experience for me.”
- Yahoo! Sports
And then there was 2 days ago in Anaheim, in the Dallas Stars post season opener against the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Anaheim Ducks. A game that saw the Stars, with Richards assistance win by a convincing 4-0 shutout.
…Tippett said it was Richards’ best game as a member of the team, and that includes the Feb. 28 score-a-thon against the Chicago Blackhawks.
“It’s like when a traded player finishes up and comes back the next season. Everything comes easier, and that’s what we’re looking for right now,” Tippett said. “And (Game 1) was a byproduct of that transition from one phase to another.”
- Yahoo! Sports
Anaheim Ducks players and coaches alike had nothing but praise for Richards after his impact on Game 1 of the series.
“You’re talking about an MVP of the playoffs, we’re not talking about a player who doesn’t know how to get around the rink,” Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said.
“He’s one of those guys who can cause everyone a lot of headaches when they’re on the ice because it’s up to everybody to play smart and be in position to protect breakout passes and stuff like that,” Ducks defenseman Scott Niedermayer added. - Yahoo! Sports
Game 2 between the 2 clubs starts this evening, and the Stars can be sure to see a much more physical and determined Ducks team than they did in game 1.

There were a number of games going on around the NHL today, but none caused so much gasps as the Los Angeles Kings Vs the Detroit Redwings.
Going into todays game these 2 teams were at the extreme ends of the ladder. The Redwings in #1 spot in the Western Conference (and league) on 86pts and the Kings right at the other end of the ladder in last place on 47pts.
Today proved that any team can beat the best team on the right day.
The Kings looked down and out going into the third period trailing 1-3. Patrick O’Sullivan kicked started the comeback just 39 seconds in and the Redwings never seemed to recover. Frolov, Stuart and Kopitar all put the puck in the net giving the Kings a 5-3 victory over the League leading Redwings.
The Kings gained the best praise from the Detroit Redwings themselves;
“Their team won more battles and got more pucks to the net,” Babcock said. “Their power play was better than our penalty kill and their penalty kill was better than our power play.
“Every once in a while in life you need to be reminded. We know you can’t just come to the rink and put your jersey on. You’ve got to outwork the opposition.” - Yahoo Sports
Although the Kings hold no chance of making the post-season this year, they can still go into each game playing for pride. If todays game is anything to go by, they are doing just that.
When looking at the latest NHL standings, many are rather shocked to find that annual bottom feeders of the last few seasons, the Phoenix Coyotes, are currently sitting in 8th spot in the Western Conference.
This surge up the standings should not be attributed to top line offense or good coaching however. In fact, even though the Coyotes have the likes of Shane Doan (17-34-51) and Radim Vrbata (24-18-42) leading their offense, it’s what, or more accuractly WHO is between the pipes that has made the real difference.
Since being acquired from the Anaheim Ducks, Ilya Bryzgalov seems to have found a team that is willing to give him the starting goalie label he desires, and he’s proving his worth by delivering consistent play night after night. Bryzgalov, with 18 wins and 11 losses since joining the Coyotes has a respectable GAA of 2.38 and SV% of 0.920
Phoenix are just 2 points behind defending Stanley Cup champions, the Anaheim Ducks right now, and the way things are going, could pass them in the coming days.
