Peter Pocklington is well known in hockey circles, being the owner of the Edmonton Oilers during their glory days of the 80’s.

At an auction recently, Pocklington sold off a range of hockey memorabilia at auction.  The value of the sales is believed to be worth $294,269 US.

Included in the sale are 5 Stanley Cup Rings (84, 85, 87, 88 & 90), 3 Edmonton Trappers PCL Rings (84, 96 & 97), a 1987 Clarence Campbell Bowl replica and a 1985 Miniature Stanley Cup.

“It’s just memorabilia,” Pocklington told the Edmonton Journal. “I remember being there in real life and those memories will last forever.

“To look at a hunk of gold, that I keep in a safe most of the time anyway, every five years, doesn’t make much sense,” he said. “I’d just as soon use that money and the interest on it to look after my grandchildren.”

Pocklington isn’t new to the sales game of course.  He is the man who sold Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings, and in past years has sold other items at auction, including another Stanley Cup miniature and a replica of the Clarence Bowl.

Sharks hire Detroit assistant as new coach

Posted by admin on 12th, 2008

The San Jose Sharks have hired a new head coach.  Todd McLellan, formerly an assistant coach with the Stanley Cup winning Detroit Red Wings will be formerly announced as the new head coach on Thursday.

“It’s a very good feeling,” McLellan said in a statement released by the team. “From the first moment Doug called to the moment he offered the job, I felt comfortable. I think the Sharks have done a tremendous job. You don’t get that close to 50 wins for a number of years in a row without a lot of talent. It’s a matter of getting over the hump. There are some real parallels between the Wings and the Sharks.”

The Sharks hope that McLellan, who has experience with cup winning teams will help take the Sharks all the way.

Red Wings’ Henrik Zetterberg wins Conn Smythe - NHL - Yahoo! Sports

Posted by admin on 5th, 2008

Henrik Zetterberg has been awared the Conn Smythe trophy as the Playoff MVP.   There was little doubt after the final horn blew that Zetterberg would be the one to take home the award.  His solid 2-way play and never-say-die attitide has made hime one of the best players to play with, and one of the worse players to play against.

Zetterberg was quick to give the honor to the guys he players with.

“It’s special to be on there with so many great players—especially Nick,”
- Yahoo! Sports

From the Pittsburgh Penguins,

“He certainly deserved it,” Penguins coach Michel Therrien said. “There’s no doubt he was an important player for that group.”

Zetterberg is also the favorite to win the Selke Trophy for the leagues best defensive forward.

Anaheim on the edge of elimination

Posted by admin on 19th, 2008

A week ago who would have thought that the Anaheim Ducks would be on the edge of playoff elimination in game 5 against the Dallas Stars.  All but die-hard Dallas Fans appeared to have that much confidence in this Stars team, but they went out and they battled hard.

And today, in less than 12hrs time the Dallas Stars stand on the edge of 2 major milestones; elimination the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Anaheim Ducks from the playoffs, and more importantly making it past a first round.

Although the Stars share their victories and defeats equally, netminder Marty Turco needs this more than ever.  Turco has been the brunt of the public backlash over the last fews seasons, even last year when he posted 3 shutouts in a 7 game series against Vancouver, which the Stars eventually lost in.

“Tonight I felt really good,” said Turco, who made 28 saves. “I had an opportunity to see all the shots that came my way. There were some anxious, scrambly moments in the second period. But the guys were doing all they could to help me.”
- Yahoo! Sports

The Stars have momentum and a “knowledge” that they can win.  Now, they just have to go out there and take it.

Hi guys, sorry for the delays of late with the updates.  We’ve been out of town on and off preparing for the start of the AIHL hockey season down this way.

Added new videos today and yesterday.  With the addition of the new Playoffs category, I also added 2 predictions videos to that section.  Quite interesting, have a listen.

A couple of must see videos:

Brian Murray caused a few issues recently when he accused the Penguins of throwing their last game, so they would play the Senators in the first round of the playoffs.  Agree or disagree, here is the clip, and the fallout.

A classic MacDonalds commercial featuring Mats Sundin and Wayne Gretzky.  You can’t help but enjoy this one.

Last but not least, how can you not like the Washington Capitals winning their division and making the playoffs.  go Ovy!

Dallas Stars in a Serious Slump

Posted by admin on 24th, 2008

Normally a team others look up for strong defensive play, a never say die attitude and gritty, hard hitting forechecking, the Dallas Stars of late have not fit the bill.  In fact over recent games the Stars, who have gone 3-7-0 in their last 10 games are in a major slump, and have chosen the worse possible time to do it.

All teams go through slumps though, and in the NHL these days a slump means very little in the big scheme of things.  The Detroit Red Wings, who lead the entire league in points went through a slump very similar to the one the Stars are in, and went on to a hot streak soon after.  The San Jose Sharks had a slump before going on their current hot streak.

For the Stars then, it’s surely only a matter of time before the team gains back its confidence and gets back on track.   Stars Captain Brenden Morrow spoke of confidence recently…

“That’s probably one way to describe it,” Stars captain Brenden Morrow said. “I think confidence is an attitude you have. We’ve had it at times, but right now we don’t, and it’s going to take more than just one game to get it back. It’s going to take a handful of games where you get ugly, where you dig in, and where you earn your bounces. That’s the way we have to look at this, we have to look at it that we have a lot of work to do.”
- Mike Heika, Dallas Morning News

The Stars face the San Jose Sharks later this week, and hope to break their slump in California.  Word is BJ Crombeen has been called up from the minors, so maybe look to see a cold-streak winger be a healthy scratch during the upcoming games.

Consistant reffing a must for the Playoffs

Posted by admin on 21st, 2008

It’s that time of year again.  The NHL Playoffs are just around the corner, and teams are already starting to prepare for the post-season.  In the West it’s highly possible that the 8 Playoff teams will be made up of 4 from the Northwest Division, 3 from the Pacific and 1 from the Central.  In the East it’s possible that there will be 4 from the Atlantic, 3 from the Northeast and just 1 from the Southeast.

One could argue that the Southeast and Central Divisions are the weakest in their respective divisions, and the current NHL schedule could be seen as biased towards strong teams from those divisions.   That is a topic for another day.

Today I want to touch on something that can make or break a game in the NHL, or in fact in any hockey league; Refereeing.

Bad calls are something we learn to live with in professional sports.  We must remember of course that the people in the black and white stripes don’t always see things the way we do.  There are times however when bad calls have influenced the result of a game.   Just this week referees made a bad call and caused a 2 minute minor on a team, then just 30 seconds later failed to pull up a goalie interference call on the opposition team, which resulted in a Powerplay Goal.

The Playoffs however are the be all and end all of NHL hockey.  Teams battle it out all season to make the Playoffs and the last thing they want or need are referees not doing their jobs properly.

We can only hope then that we will have a relatively clean Playoff Series, not just from the teams, but also the Referees.

Crosby Returns, Pens Shutout Bolts

Posted by admin on 5th, 2008

The long awaited return of Sidney Crosby came today, and with it a 2 goal shutout of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

But don’t think this was an easy game for Crosby and the Penguins.  It took til the 17th minute of the third period before a puck finally reached the back of the net, a Maxim Talbot goal that was setup by none other than Crosby himself.

“It’s good to get it over with and get that feel and get that timing back, but it’s still not there,” Crosby said. “I had some great chances that I would have loved to put in. It didn’t happen. Sometimes that’s the way it goes. I’m a little rusty.”
- Yahoo! Sports

Evgeni Malkin also scored, putting the puck in an empty net to ensure victory, and a shutout for goalie Marc-Andre Fleury
