2mins Player of the day:

  • Tobias Stephan (G - Stars) earns our player of the day for his win over the Minnesota Wild.  Stephan played in only his 2nd ever NHL game.   His last game, almost a year ago was on the road in Chicago, a game where he played solid but lost the game in overtime.  A year is a long time to wait to prove you can play at this level, but Stephan did that today.

Stars of the day:

  • Teemu Selanne (Ducks), got his game on with a hat trick against the Detroit Red Wings
  • Tobias Stephan (Stars) made his NHL debut for 2008 with a 4-2 win over the Wild
  • Ryan Getzlaf (Ducks) had 5 assists in the Ducks win over the Red Wings
  • Matt Stajan (Maple Leafs) scored 2 goals in the Leafs shootout win over the Devils
  • Pavel Datsyuk (Red Wings) scored a pair against the Ducks

…and there were none:

  • Going into todays game the Wild had no suffered a regulation loss this season, the only team remaining to do so.  Tobias Stephan and the Stars put and end to that with a solid 4-2 win over the travelling team.

Demoted:

  • Jordan Staal has been demoted to the third line during Wednesday’s Penguins practice.

Trade Deadline moved:

  • The NHL has announced that the Trade Deadline will be moved back to March 4.  The change has been approved by both the NHL and the NHLPA.

oh, they’re hurt:

  • Sergei Zubov (Stars) should be back in the Stars lineup this Saturday.
  • Randy Jones (Flyers) could resume skating in 2 weeks and should be back on the team before Christmas.
  • Jere Lehtinen (Stars) is rumored to begin skating again soon.
  • Tim Connolly (Sabres) is unlikely to play this weekend with a back injury.
  • Pascal Leclaire (Blue Jackets) is looking at a second opinion after his MRI revealed just a sprained ankle.
  • Bryan McCabe (Panthers) began skating on his own Monday.
  • Rick DiPietro (Islanders) will not be on the upcoming road trip.

He shoots… the scores:

  • Toronto Maple Leafs 6 - 5 New Jersey Devils (shootout)
  • Dallas Stars 4 - 2 Minnesota Wild
  • Anaheim Ducks 5 - 4 Detroit Red Wings (overtime)

Niedermayer to play another year with Ducks

Posted by admin on 27th, 2008

The Anaheim Ducks gave all-star defenseman Scott Niedermayer and forward Teemu Selanne a late June deadline to decide if they’re going to return to the team for another season. There is yet to be word from Teemu, but Niedermayer answered the call today, announcing that yes, he would be back to finish his contract next season.

“I guess after a shorter year and shorter playoff run I definitely feel physically and mentally ready to go,” Niedermayer said. “I’m happy to have a decision made and to be moving forward.”
- Yahoo! Sports

Niedermayer has been an impact player for the Ducks since joining the team 3 years ago, and hopes to help the team again this coming season.

Free Agency (ab)Use

Posted by admin on 8th, 2008

The 2008-2009 NHL season will go down in the history books as one of controversy and debate, and nothing sparks greater debate this season that the use of the Free Agency Market.

At the center of many of these debates are the defending champions, the Ahaheim Ducks and their re-signing of Teemu Selanne and Scott Neidermayer.  Neidermayer of course was not a free agent, and not really valid in discussion.

Selanne however has created quite an uproar among fans over the last few weeks.  Added to that we now have news that Peter Forsberg wants back in the NHL and is once again fresh meat hanging in the free agency marketplace.

The great debate centers around a single question.

Should free agents who have “retired” or are “thinking about retiring”, who don’t sign with a team at the start of the season be allowed to jump back into the league mid-season when they get the urge?

Of course, let’s be honest here.  The reason fans are so upset isn’t that Selanne has returned.   It’s the way that both Selanne and Neidermayer waited until such a time that the Ducks could fit them into the salary cap.   To many, this is seen as using the salary cap in a way that is neither ethical nor right.

Forsberg is a different story however, as his decision not to play this season was not by choice, but by force due to injuries.  So should he be granted asylum to this argument?

Something to ponder, that’s for sure.
