The Minnesota Wild have found their man. It is announced today that the Wild have named Todd Richards as the new head coach. The Wild are taking a huge risk with Richards, who has just 1 year NHL experience behind the bench as an assistant coach for the San Jose Sharks last season. Richards will replace Jacques Lemaire, who resigned in April, possibly ending the defense first style of play the Wild are known for. This change in coaching follows the recent firing of Dave Tippett and hiring of Marc Crawford by the Dallas Stars.

News
- The Windy City blows no challenge for Winter Classic
Those capricious winds at Wrigley Field that make baseballs do crazy things could be a factor on New Year’s Day when hockey takes over the home of the Chicago Cubs. But when the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings meet on a rink that will stretch from first to third base, neither team will have an advantage in the third period—even if it’s a blustery and cold day. That’s because they’ll switch sides in the middle of the final period, NBC coordinating producer Sam Flood said Monday during a conference call promoting the network’s coverage of the Winter Classic. (The Full Story on Yahoo)
- Lemieux starts the long road back
You could call Claude Lemieux “the Comeback Kid.” Except that at his age, he’s no kid. And as for the comeback part, now that’s where it gets interesting. Five years after hanging up his skates for good – or so he thought at the time – the feisty (some prefer to call him dirty) Lemieux is back in the game he loves, but hasn’t always loved him back. - Carey Price (G – Canadiens) Could be out til after Christmas.
- Craig Rivet (D – Sabres) Out 2 weeks after shoulder surgery.

Rumours & Gossip (from spectorshockey.net):
- Bob McKenzie reports barring the unforeseen Mats Sundin’s choices are now down to the Vancouver Canucks and NY Rangers.
- Michael Russo reported on the possibility something could be brewing between the Wild and Atlatna Thrashers. “I was told two days ago from a source of mine in the league that the two teams were talking trade. Then, all of a sudden, Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell appears and attends both Wild games in California. And during the first intermission, Waddell and Wild GM Doug Risebrough looked to be having a serious conversation”, reports Russo.
- Aaron Portzline reports the Blue Jackets have placed goalie Fredrik Norrena on waivers but it remains to be seen whether they’ll try to demote him if he clears waivers on Tuesday since he’s already refused to accept a conditioning stint in the minors.

Ross McKeon of Yahoo! Sports has released the weeks power rankings, this week based on the people between the pipes, the netminders. While it’s no surprise who leads the pack with regards to rankings, you might be surprised to ended up quite a way down the list.
The San Jose Sharks lead the pack with the Evgeni Nabokov / Brian Boucher combination. Boucher actually has a better GAA and SV% than Nabokov.
Coming in at #2 are the Boston Bruins who are led by the Tim Thomas / Manny Fernandez combination.
Third place belongs to the annual-cup-contenders, the Detroit Red Wings who have managed to get by with Chris Osgood actually being off his game. Backup Ty Conklin has been solid at his role.
The surprises?
For me, no bigger surprise than to see the Tampa Bay Lightning at #30. Mike Smith is the only reason that team hasn’t been beaten back into the 1700’s! Just ahead of the Lightning are the Islanders who, fair enough, have suffered from medical issues for starter Rick DiPietro. Backup Joey MacDonald has been spectacular and is starting to show he’s ready to challenge for DiPietro’s starter role. Right in the middle of the pack see’s the Vancouver Canucks sitting in spot #15. The Canucks have what is considered by many the best netminder in the league, Roberto Luongo.
View the full Power Rankings by visiting Ross McKeon’s column on Yahoo! Sports.
