Penguins’ Gonchar Played With Torn MCL.
Showing the true meaning of the word “trooper”, Sergey Gonchar reportedly played the final 2 rounds of the playoffs with a torn MCL. “Lots of guys were playing with bruises,” Gonchar said. Bruises are a far cry from a torn MCL. Kudos to you Gonchar, not get that MCL fixed up!
Bylsma Likes Back-To-Back Chances
Speaking like a coach who just won the Stanley Cup (shock horror), Dan Bylsma has said that he likes the idea of the Penguins coming back strong next year to win back-to-back Cups. “Pressure is something I don’t put a lot of stock in,” Bylsma said. “I think we can get back to the foundation and build again and try to do this again. It’s only one team a year that gets that opportunity and we’re going to try that next year. The challenge is you have to start all over again. You don’t get to start back on June 13.” That hasn’t been done since ‘97/’98 by the Detroit Red Wings. It’s just dripping in irony.
Crosby Dismisses Wings Snub Accusation
First of all, of course he dismisses it. You would have to be an idiot to actually admit it. After Kris Draper came out and accused Crosby of snubbing the Red Wings after their game 7 win, the attention went directly onto the young Penguins Captain. Crosby however wasn’t fazed at all. “I really don’t need to talk to anyone from Detroit about it,” Crosby said Sunday. “I made the attempt to go shake hands. I’ve been on that side of things, too, I know it’s not easy, waiting around. I just won the Stanley Cup, and I think I have the right to celebrate with my teammates.”
Malkin wins Conn Smythe, Joins Mario
He led the entire playoffs in points and had an impact on the game, and deservedly came away with the hardware. Evgeni Malkin was awared the Conn Smythe award for Playoff MVP. He joins Mario Lemieux in the long list of Conn Smythe winners.

Apparently the NHL All Stars game is in trouble. It seems every year somebody, somewhere comes up with a number of reasons the ASG is a waste of time. Craig Custance talks about the ASG and offers a number of ways to help “Save” the game.

So far we’ve seen the Pittsburgh Penguins face off against the Buffalo Sabres and the Detroit Red Wings take on the Chicago Blackhawks. Now that the 2009 Winter Classic is over with, fans are left wondering;
Who could be potential future match-ups?
Before you can really start to make a list you need to think about what goes in to a good Winter Classic game.
Rivalry is the most important feature in my opinion. Having 2 rival teams going against each other in the cold out doors seems allmost… fitting.
How about “old Vs new”?
I would love to see a match-up between the Dallas Stars and their old home-town “new team” Minnesota Wild. While these 2 teams may not have a rivalry, this game would provide plenty of excitement for fans.
So here’s my list of top 5 Winter Classic games i would like to see.
- Dallas Stars @ Minnesota Wild. This gets #1 for 2 reason; 1) i’m slightly biased being a Stars fan, but more importantly 2) because up in Minnesota people still talk about how the Stars turned their back on the fans. Crazy i know, but for fans, this game could be huge.
- Montreal Canadiens @ Toronto Maple Leafs. Is there a bigger rivalry?
- Washington Capitals @ New York Rangers. The Winter Classic has seen Sid the kid, now it’s time to introduce it to Ovy.
- New York Rangers @ Boston Bruins. A classic match-up if there ever was one.
- Philadelphia Flyers @ Pittsburgh Penguins. The battle of Pensylvania.
Gary Bettman and the NHL seem keen on focussing on the US teams for the Winter Classic, possibly in a hope to increase ratings within the US. While I understand the logic here, i do disagree with it. The Habs Vs Leafs game would be fantastic to watch, even for fans of other teams.

Avery Alert: With so much news surrounding the Sean Avery situation, our new section “Avery Alert” will bring you all the news comments you need in one handy location. Don’t worry though, this section will only last a short time and will stop once we all get sick off hearing about Avery.
- Avery to meet with Bettman and the NHL Thursday.
The date of the hearing has been set; this Thursday. Avery will travel to New York to face the NHL. Stars co-GM Brett Hull is said to be traveling with Avery. (The Full Story on TSN)
- No Way Out For Avery
Ross McKeon of Yahoo! Sports breaks down the Avery situation and explains that there may be no way for Avery to come out of this in a good position. (The Full Story on Yahoo)
- Avery Apologises to NHL, Team, Ex’s
Avery’s publicist wasted no time in drafting a well written apology. (The Full Story on Yahoo)
- NHL Suspends Avery Indefinitely
After making the “sloppy seconds” comment, the NHL quickly jumped in and indefinitely suspended the agitator. (The Full Story on TSN)
News
- Fan injured in fall at Senators game
A male fan was injured at Scotiabank Place on Wednesday during the Ottawa Senators’ 5-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers after falling from the top level of the arena. The man, who Senators president Roy Mlakar stated was not inebriated, originally fell over in row D of the 300 level. He then plummeted into row D of the 200 level, falling on a woman who also sustained injuries. Mlakar believes the man was not seriously hurt. (The Full Story on Yahoo)
- Canes Sack Peter Laviolette
Carolina fired Peter Laviolette on Wednesday. The Hurricanes brought back Paul Maurice to take over as coach, and moved assistant general manager Ron Francis behind the bench as Maurice’s associate coach. Laviolette led the team to the 2006 Stanley Cup title. He’s the career victory leader among U.S.-born coaches.
Trades & Transactions:
- Anaheim acquired defenseman Logan Stephenson from Phoenix on Wednesday for left wing Joakim Lindstrom. Stephenson will report to Iowa of the AHL.
Injuries:
- Brian Rolston (NJ Devils) – Expected back thursday.
- Joe Sakic (C – Avalanche) Expected to miss 6 weeks.
- Marian Gaborik (Wild) Not yet ready to return.
Rumours & Gossip:
- What to do with Avery?
Rumours are ripe that Avery has played his last game in a Stars jersey. If that’s the case, there are a few options the team has, which include: Demoting him to the minors, buying out his contract, looking for a trade, or going through legal channals to void his contract. Either way, if it’s true that Avery is on the out, this could mean a very positive thing for the team.
- Havlat on the block?
After recent changes which ended up with Martin Havlat being demoted to the teams 3rd line, speculation suggests the Hawks could be looking to move him at some stage.
Scores:
- Pittsburgh Penguins 2 – 3 NY Rangers (Shootout)
- Atlanta Thrashers 1 – 5 Ottawa Senators
- St Louis Blues 0 – 4 Minnesota Wild
- Anaheim Ducks 2 – 4 Chicago Blackhawks
- Dallas Stars 2 – Edmonton Oilers 5

2mins Player of the day:
- Tobias Stephan (G – Stars) earns our player of the day for his win over the Minnesota Wild. Stephan played in only his 2nd ever NHL game. His last game, almost a year ago was on the road in Chicago, a game where he played solid but lost the game in overtime. A year is a long time to wait to prove you can play at this level, but Stephan did that today.
Stars of the day:
- Teemu Selanne (Ducks), got his game on with a hat trick against the Detroit Red Wings
- Tobias Stephan (Stars) made his NHL debut for 2008 with a 4-2 win over the Wild
- Ryan Getzlaf (Ducks) had 5 assists in the Ducks win over the Red Wings
- Matt Stajan (Maple Leafs) scored 2 goals in the Leafs shootout win over the Devils
- Pavel Datsyuk (Red Wings) scored a pair against the Ducks
…and there were none:
- Going into todays game the Wild had no suffered a regulation loss this season, the only team remaining to do so. Tobias Stephan and the Stars put and end to that with a solid 4-2 win over the travelling team.
Demoted:
- Jordan Staal has been demoted to the third line during Wednesday’s Penguins practice.
Trade Deadline moved:
- The NHL has announced that the Trade Deadline will be moved back to March 4. The change has been approved by both the NHL and the NHLPA.
oh, they’re hurt:
- Sergei Zubov (Stars) should be back in the Stars lineup this Saturday.
- Randy Jones (Flyers) could resume skating in 2 weeks and should be back on the team before Christmas.
- Jere Lehtinen (Stars) is rumored to begin skating again soon.
- Tim Connolly (Sabres) is unlikely to play this weekend with a back injury.
- Pascal Leclaire (Blue Jackets) is looking at a second opinion after his MRI revealed just a sprained ankle.
- Bryan McCabe (Panthers) began skating on his own Monday.
- Rick DiPietro (Islanders) will not be on the upcoming road trip.
He shoots… the scores:
- Toronto Maple Leafs 6 – 5 New Jersey Devils (shootout)
- Dallas Stars 4 – 2 Minnesota Wild

Trades & Rumours:
From spectorshockey.net (click to view the full report):
- PIONEER PRESS: Tom Powers reports multiple sources claim Marian Gaborik and his agent rejected a ten-year contract offer worth over $8 million per season from the Minnesota Wild. Powers suggests to GM Doug Risebrough that if he can’t re-sign Gaborik soon he needs to trade him fast otherwise the worse it’ll be when he finally does decide to move him.
- OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports sources claims Senators owner Eugene Melnyk met with former Toronto Maple Leaf Mats Sundin last weekend in Sweden during the Senators weekend games there against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Melnyk apparently told Sundin of the sincerity of GM Bryan Murray’s interest in signing Sundin, who has yet to make a decision as to his future. Garrioch also reports Sundin is rumored unlikely to return to the Maple Leafs if he does decide to return, preferring to sign with a Cup contender.
- COURIER POST ONLINE: Chuck Gormley reports Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren spent most of Wednesday shopping around for an experienced defenseman to replace injury blueliner Ryan Parent but had nothing yet to report.

Forward Jeff Friesen meanwhile remains in limbo as he and the club attempt to work out a contract but GM Doug Wilson suggested his status could be resolved soon.
- SPORTING NEWS: Craig Custance reports Atlanta Thrashers goaltender Ondrej Pavelec has decided to report to the club’s minor league affiliate.
- MIAMI HERALD: George Richards reports the Florida Panthers continue to negotiate a contract with defenseman Jassen Cullimore. If he’s signed fellow blueliner Cory Murphy, who recently cleared waivers, could be a roster casualty.

- DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika reports the Stars placed defenseman Doug Janik on waivers, where he was claimed by the Chicago Blackhawks, then re-acquired him via trade, exchanging a conditional seventh round draft pick with the Blackhawks.
