- 2002-03 Round 4/Game 6: Scott Stevens Crushes Paul Kariya
The last of the classic Scott Stevens bone crushing hits. It happens only a few minutes after the Pandolfo goal. Scott Gomez turns the puck over in center ice and Paul Kariya grabs it. A second or two after Kariya dished a pass off, Scott Stevens catches Kariya with a punishing hit that knocks him out cold. It looks like this would be the turning point for the Devils. And it would be. Unfortunately it would turn the wrong way for the Devils as Kariya would not only return, but score a goal, making it 4-1 Anaheim. - EDMONTON SUN: Derek Van Diest yesterday reported the Edmonton Oilers intend to start the season with three goalies, unwilling to demote Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, who has had a good pre-season, as he’d first have to pass through waivers where he’d be claimed by a rival club.
- MLIVE.COM: Ansar Khan reports Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland was working the phones trying to move a defenseman prior to the 3 PM deadline on Wednesday to submit final rosters to the league and be salary cap compliant. An NHL source claims Holland is shopping defenseman Kyle Quincey .

Team News:
- Melrose not liking what he sees with Lightning
Perhaps Barry Melrose should have known better. After spending more than a decade as a television analyst, the 52-year-old Melrose opted to return to the bench as coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who finished the 2007-08 season with an NHL-worst 31 wins. And after the Lightning dropped a pair of 2-1 decisions to the New York Rangers this weekend - and were outshot, 80-40, in the process - the normally relaxed coach was rather vocal with his displeasure. (Yahoo! Sports)
- Luongo wearing the “C” on mask
Roberto Luongo is sporting a C
after all. The Vancouver captain, forbidden by NHL rules from wearing
the letter on his jersey because he is a goaltender, sported a new C on
his mask Sunday night as the Canucks hosted Anaheim in the final
2008-09 pre-season game for both clubs. “It can stand for whatever he
wants it to stand for,” said Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis,
when asked if the C stood for Canucks or captain. (Yahoo! Sports)

Trades & Rumours:
From Spectorshockey.net (click to view the full report):
- CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Chris Kuc reported Blackhawks goalie Nikolai Khabiblin remains in limbo while Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon “explores opportunities” to benefit the netminder and the Blackhawks.
- CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: Len Ziehm reports Khabibulin could end up playing in Russia.”Tallon hasn’t been able to move Khabibulin to another NHL team.
- EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson reports on some trade possibilities for the Minnesota Wild if forced to deal Marian Gaborik, who’ll be a UFA next summer. One suggestion was to peddle him to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Evgeni Malkin as the Pens are “very weak on the wing”.
- Matheson also reports that if the Chicago Blackhawks fail to land Washington’s Michael Nylander they might pursue Boston’s Marc Savard, suggesting the Bruins might do it if they got defenseman Brent Seabrook and young winger Jack Skille in return.
- BOSTON HERALD: Stephen Harris reports Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has said there’s a good chance he’ll make a trade in the coming days and there’s no doubt he’s been trying to move veteran forward Peter Schaefer to free up cap space for promising youngster Blake Wheeler. If Schaefer isn’t traded Harris suggests he could be waived and demoted.
- CALGARY SUN: Randy Sportak reports Flames GM Darryl Sutter needs to pare three players and more than $1 million from his payroll prior to the start of the season.
- PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: Dave Molinari reports the Penguins could find some extra cap room to bring in more depth by placing injured defenseman Sergei Gonchar on the long-term injury status, noting that the club would be allowed to go over the cap to the amount of Gonchar’s salary for this season to bring in a replacement for as long as he remains on the long term injury list.
- PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER: reports the Flyers have released defenseman Bryan Berard and center Jim Dowd.

(sports.yahoo.com)
Signings & Acquisitions:
- O’Neill ends comeback attempt
Jeff O’Neill has ended his NHL comeback bid with the Carolina Hurricanes. He notified the team of his decision after Sunday’s exhibition win over Philadelphia. - Ducks trade D O’Donnell to Kings

O’Donnell played in all 82 of Anaheim’s games in 2007-08, scoring twice and adding seven assists for nine points with a plus-9 rating. He was 1-1-2 and plus-3 in the Ducks’ six-game playoff loss to Dallas. (nhl.com)
Trades & Rumours:
From Spectorshockey.net:
- Steve Buffery reports the NY Rangers have reportedly issued “an ultimatum of sorts” to former Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin to make up his mind if he’ll play for them. The club is attempting to re-sign former Rangers winger Brendan Shanahan.
- Chris Stevenson reports further on Daniel Alfredsson’s contract status. “(I)f Alfredsson plays 70 games and gets at least 70 points this season, he has the option to accept $3.8 million (all terms US) for next season or declare himself an unrestricted free agent”, writes Stevenson, adding that if Alfredsson doesn’t hit that “70-70″ mark, the Senators keep him for next season at $3.8 million, but the Sens don’t want to take a chance that he could be come a UFA next summer. Talks between Senators GM Bryan Murray and agent JP Barry are in the preliminary stage.
- Erik Erlendsson reports the Lightning likely aren’t done cutting payroll after trading Nick Tarnasky and waiving Michel Ouellet, suggesting David Koci, Jason Ward and Ryan Craig are the bubble players. Erlendsson guesses Koci could be the odd man out unless a trade develops over the next 72 hours.

From Spectorshockey.net:
- Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke denies he might have interest in Mats Sundin if he should decide to return by mid-season. “No,” Burke said. “That’s someone else’s fantasy.”
- John Vogl reports there are several ways to view forward Maxim Afinogenov playing on the Sabres top line; either to showcase him, bolster his confidence or that’s where they feel he belongs. The Sabres tried unsuccessfully to trade Afinogenov this summer following a disappointing 2007-08 performance but he said he’s trying not to think about the trade rumors or how long he might be with the Sabres.
- Ed Willes reports the Canucks won’t be able to land Marian Gaborik this season but given their need for offensive depth they could be keeping an eye on his contract situation with the Minnesota Wild. Willes suggests the Canucks might be willing to overpay to sign him.
