Turco faces media over Gaffe

  • (The following is an article by Yahoo! Sports’ Ross McKeon.  To view the full article, please click here)

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Give Marty Turco credit. After gift-wrapping a victory for the host San Jose Sharks in the final 30 seconds with a giveaway of immense proportions, at least the Dallas Stars goaltender was brave enough to face the music.

With the embarrassing play he made late in regulation of Saturday night’s game, when Stars were ohhhhhhh so close to escaping with at least one, if not two, very needed points, it would have been easy to crawl into the stick bag and quietly exit HP Pavilion for the flight out of town without saying anything to anybody.

That, however, only would have compounded the situation the Stars find themselves in, a very good team on paper that’s a long way back in the Pacific Division standings. The only way to get to where Dallas belongs is through leadership and accountability… (read more)

Anderson, Larionov, Scapinello & Chynoweth’s big day arrives

  • (The following article is by Chris Johnston of the Canadian Press)

TORONTO – The big moment is finally set to arrive for Mork and The Professor.

Passed over in years past, Glenn Anderson and Igor Larionov will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday night along with linesman Ray Scapinello and junior hockey builder Ed Chynoweth.

The wait has been longest for Anderson. He’s been eligible since 1999 and had to watch as 23 players were enshrined before him during that time.

Perhaps it’s only fitting for a guy that has never done things the traditional way, which earned him the nickname Mork – after a TV alien from outer space. Anderson won six Stanley Cups during his career and earned a reputation as a big-game player… (read more)

  • Paille was a healthy scratch on Saturday after a poor performance on Friday, according to The Buffalo News.

  • Chicago Blackhawks 6 – 1 Calgary Flames
  • Edmonton Oilers 2 – 1 New Jersey Devils
  • Florida Panthers 3 – 1 Anaheim Ducks

The Avangard Omsk hockey team on Monday played its first Kontinental Hockey League game since the death of promising winger Alexei Cherepanov.

With Cherepanov’s parents in attendance, captain Alexander Svitov and alternates Anton Kuryanov and Alexander Popov skated with Cherepanov’s jersey No. 7 before it was raised to the rafters. An announcement was made that his No. 7 will never be worn again.

“It was tough on those three guys,” Omsk coach Wayne Fleming told TSN of Canada on Monday. “They didn’t have a lot of time to wipe their tears before the puck drop and away they went. And there was no warmup music at all. There was no talking among the players as both teams went about their warmup rituals and practice drills.”

    to dinner.”

Avery made his presence felt upon his return to Manhattan after 1

League Updates:

  • Sarah Palin drops first puck at Flyers’ home opener
To a mixture of boos and cheers, Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin dropped the ceremonial first puck Saturday night at the Philadelphia Flyers’ home opener against the New York Rangers.  The Alaska governor and self-described “hockey mom” heard a few boos when she walked onto the ice, but that soon turned to polite applause as she headed to centre ice with Mike Richards of the Flyers and Scott Gomez – from Alaska – of the Rangers. • Devils play opener despite arena code dispute
The New Jersey Devils played their home opener as scheduled Friday night despite a construction code dispute that closed the Prudential Center down this summer.  The team obtained a temporary certificate of occupancy to enable it to play the opener against the New York Islanders, and was closing in on a permanent solution. Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek said the paperwork required for a permanent certificate was submitted to the City of Newark last week.  “The city is reviewing those documents and we’re both close to getting it done,” Vanderbeek said in a telephone interview. “We could hear back from them as early as next week.” (Yahoo! • Hull among four inducted into U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame
The Dallas Stars surely can forgive Brett Hull for missing the team’s 2008-09 season opener.  The co-general manager of the Stars, Hull skipped the club’s first game of the campaign Friday in order to be one of four players inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.  Also inducted during the ceremony at the Magness Arena were Brian Leetch, Mike Richter and Cammi Granato, who was the first woman to receive the honor. The addition of the quartet gives the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame 138 members. (Yahoo! Sports)
