Those who had hopes of their NHL team picking up veteran scorer, Mats Sundin will have to wait til possibly next year after the Maple Leaf Forward today refused to waive his no trade clause.

Sundin, a Maple Leaf all his professional hockey career does not want to leave the team he has dedicated his life to for the last 13 seasons.

“I have always believed I would finish my career as a Toronto Maple Leaf so the actual request was still a very difficult one for me to contemplate,” Sundin said in a statement released by his agent J.P. Barry on Sunday night. “I have spoken to and listened to my family and those closest to me about this issue. In the end, there is no right decision in a situation like this one.”

The Toronto media has not been easy on Sundin over recent weeks, with some sources claiming his refusal to waive his no trade clause will damage the team in the future.  The fact is, while the media and fans may complain about his refusal to be traded, they are forgetting that Mats Sundin IS the face of that franchise, and he has more than earned his right to stay in Toronto.

Due to his age, a trade would have put Sundin as a rental player, something Sundin himself completely disagrees with.

“I have never believed in the concept of a rental player. It is my belief that winning the Stanley Cup is the greatest thing you can achieve in hockey but for me, in order to appreciate it you have to have been part of the entire journey and that means October through June. I hope everyone will understand and respect my decision.”

The club now faces a major decision to make during the upcoming off-season.  Do they opt to re-sign Sundin, or let him go into the Free agent market?  Realistically, the best option for the Leafs would be to sign him for another year and let him finish out his career with the team he knows and loves.

Lundqvist Gets 6 Yr Deal

Posted by admin on 14th, 2008

If there is one thing that last years offseason taught GMs around the league it’s that no player is safe from large, seemingly unreasonable offers. The Tomas Vanek, then Dustin Penner issue saw the start of GMs locking up their players for long(ish) term deals to ensure they’re not poached by other teams. The best example of this of course is the NHLs first Hundred Million Dollar man, Alexander Ovechkin.

The latest young player to be locked up is New York Rangers netminder, Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist and the Rangers agreed on a 6 year deal today, said to pay the 25yr old Lundqvist $6.5million per year for the next 6 years.

While the length and value of the deal — believed to be for six years at more than $6.5 million per - have been set, there is language in the contract that is still being hashed out. So the Rangers are not expected to make a formal announcement until Thursday at the earliest.

February is going to be a busy month due to the trade deadline being just around the corner.  It will be interesting to keep an eye on the teams GMs and see what cards they play.

Is Emery On The Out?

Posted by admin on 4th, 2008

On and off over the last year we have heard stories about Ray Emery and his less than professional antics.  His latest, turning up late to a practice cost up in excess of $14,000 in fines.

Teams however can only take so much of these types of antics before they look to ship their players off to other teams.  Has Emery pushed the limits too far this time?

I have absolutely no doubt that if the Senators felt Gerber was consistent enough to take the team through the playoffs, they would have looked to trade Emery months back.  Could this silence from the Senators be a sign that they are not entirely confident in Gerber as a starting goalie?  Gerber’s recent play has been sloppy and he has fallen back to being his inconsistent (old) self.

The main issue, if the Senators did choose to trade Emery would be finding another team who would take a player known to have an attitude problem.
