  SAN JOSE, Calif. – Give Marty Turco credit. After gift-wrapping a victory for the host San Jose Sharks in the final 30 seconds with a giveaway of immense proportions, at least the Dallas Stars goaltender was brave enough to face the music.

  With the embarrassing play he made late in regulation of Saturday night’s game, when Stars were ohhhhhhh so close to escaping with at least one, if not two, very needed points, it would have been easy to crawl into the stick bag and quietly exit HP Pavilion for the flight out of town without saying anything to anybody.

  That, however, only would have compounded the situation the Stars find themselves in, a very good team on paper that’s a long way back in the Pacific Division standings. The only way to get to where Dallas belongs is through leadership and accountability… (read more)

Anderson, Larionov, Scapinello & Chynoweth’s big day arrives

  TORONTO - The big moment is finally set to arrive for Mork and The Professor.

  Passed over in years past, Glenn Anderson and Igor Larionov will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday night along with linesman Ray Scapinello and junior hockey builder Ed Chynoweth.

  The wait has been longest for Anderson. He’s been eligible since 1999 and had to watch as 23 players were enshrined before him during that time.

  Perhaps it’s only fitting for a guy that has never done things the traditional way, which earned him the nickname Mork - after a TV alien from outer space. Anderson won six Stanley Cups during his career and earned a reputation as a big-game player… (read more)

Stars management strikes back:

• After going 4-6-2 in their first 12 games of the season, the Dallas Stars management struck back by sending 3 players back to the minors.  James Neal, Mark Fistric and Chris Conner have all been assigned to the AHL amid rumors there could be much larger changes to come.  Some suggest a coaching change might be in the near future.

Brodeur gets stoned on streak:

• New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur will miss at least one game with an elbow injury, ending a career high streak of 51 regular season starts.

Todd White makes 500:

• Atlanta Thrasher’s Todd White played in his 500th NHL game today; a 5-3 loss to the Florida Panthers.

Injury Updates:

• Sergei Zubov placed on IR
  Zubov (hip surgery) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, the National Post reports. (ESPN)

• Islanders place trio on IR
  The New York Islanders on Tuesday placed center Mike Sillinger and defensemen Chris Campoli and Andy Sutton on injured reserve.  Sillinger, 37, underwent microfracture surgery on his right hip during the offseason. Last season, he appeared in 52 games, tallying 14 goals and 12 assists.  Campoli is sidelined with a shoulder injury and Sutton is out after undergoing surgery on his hand. (Yahoo! Sports)
• Lawrence Nycholat to miss start of season
  Nycholat had back problem flare this week and is expected to start the
  season in the injured reserve list, the Vancouver Province reports. (ESPN)

• Alexander Semin limited in practice

  The Anaheim Ducks named defenceman Scott Niedermayer team captain Tuesday, with Chris Pronger and Ryan Getzlaf serving as alternate captains.  Niedermayer, 35, previously served as Ducks captain from 2005-07. (Yahoo! Sports)

• Goalie Nikolai Khabibulin expected to start season with Chicago
  Goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin is expected to start the regular season with the Chicago Blackhawks.  The 35-year-old Khabibulin had seemed destined to be sent to the minors, traded or opt to play in his native Russia by the time the Blackhawks open their regular season Friday night in New York against the Rangers. • Patric Hornqvist: Likely to Skate On Nashville’s Top Line
  Hornqvist has all but officially secured a roster spot with the Predators, and he’s likely to begin the season on the top offensive line along with J.P. Dumont and Jason Arnott, the Nashville Tennessean reports. (Yahoo! Sports)

• Ducks clam LW Lidstrom on waivers from Blackhawks
  The Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday claimed left wing Joakim Lindstrom on waivers from Chicago and assigned him to the Iowa Chops, their affiliate in the American Hockey League.Lindstrom, 24, originally was acquired by Anaheim from Columbus for a conditional pick in the 2010 draft on July 15. He appeared in four preseason games with the Ducks, registering one assist before being claimed by Chicago on Friday. (Yahoo! Sports)

• Blackhawks release C Adams
  The Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday released center Kevyn Adams, one of five moves made by the team to reduce the roster to the league-mandated maximum of 23 players heading into the start of the regular season. (Yahoo! Sports)
• Sharks place D McLaren on waivers
  In a move necessitated by salary cap restrictions, the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday placed veteran defenseman Kyle McLaren on waivers, possibly ending his 4 1/2-year tenure with the club.  Waiving McLaren enabled the Sharks to save $2.5 million and get them under the salary cap limit of $56.7 million. • Maple Leafs sign D Schenn
  The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Luke Schenn to a three-year contract on Tuesday.  Financial terms were not disclosed. (Yahoo! Sports)
• Kings re-sign C O”Sullivan
  Patrick O’Sullivan’s holdout is over.  A restricted free agent, O’Sullivan on Tuesday signed a new three-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings.  Financial terms were not disclosed, but - citing undisclosed sources - TSN of Canada is reporting the 23-year-old center will receive an average of $2.925 million per season. • Flames’ Warrener, Eriksson placed on waivers
  The Calgary Flames placed veteran defensemen Rhett Warrener, Anders Eriksson and forward Jamie Lundmark on waivers Tuesday to get below the salary cap.  The three are headed to the Flames’ AHL affiliate in the Quad Cities unless claimed off waivers by another club or traded.  Warrener and Eriksson have one-way contracts and reassigning the three players puts Calgary’s payroll $2 million below the $56.7-million cap. • Boston Bruins keep promising rookie forward Blake Wheeler, cut five
  The Boston Bruins cut five players from their roster Tuesday and kept promising rookie forward Blake Wheeler, a first-round draft choice in 2004.  The Bruins released forward Peter Schaefer and planned to waive him and assign him to Providence of the AHL.  They also placed forwards Nate Thompson and Jeremy Reich on waivers for the purpose of assigning them to Providence, and assigned defenceman Matt Hunwick to Providence and forward Carl Soderberg to Malmo in Sweden. • Bruins waive LW Schaefer, C Reich
  Boston Bruins fans may have seen the last of Peter Schaefer and Jeremy Reich.  Schaefer and Reich, along with center Nate Thompson, were placed on waivers by the Bruins on Tuesday as the team hopes to assign the trio to Providence of the American Hockey League.  Acquired from Ottawa in July 2007, Schaefer appeared in 63 games for Boston last season, recording nine goals and 17 assists. • The Red Wings will be without wing Marian Hossa Sunday in the team’s final exhibition game against Buffalo. Hossa developed a sore groin whilst playing Saturday in Toronto and sat out the 3rd period. He mentioned he does not consider the injury serious.

• Ranger GM Glen Sather is a seller in a market that appears to feature very few buyers willing to pay 100 cents on the dollar. Sather has postponed a decision on roster cuts only as he has postponed a decision on Brendan Shanahan, who continued to skate at the club’s practice rink throughout the Rangers’ successful European tour.
• The Lightning spent the past few days thinking about trade options. Scouts were dispatched to hockey rinks across North America throughout the preseason in search of improvements.
• Not long after an NHL owner predicted Sunday that European expansion is “happening”, league commissioner Gary Bettman spoke in non-committal terms on the subject. “It is not on the drawing board”, Bettman mentioned before attending the final of 4 regular season games played in Europe over the weekend.
• If starting lineups were devised simply on merit, James Neal could be on the ice Friday at American Airlines Center when the Dallas Stars open the season against Columbus. The salary cap era, however, creates myriad reasons for keeping a player or sending him to the minors, so the fate of the rookie winger remained uncertain on Monday.

  Defenseman Luke Schenn, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ first-round pick in this year’s draft, has earned a spot on the team’s opening day roster.  The fifth overall selection in the draft, the 18-year-old Schenn had an excellent training camp for the Maple Leafs, recording a goal and a plus-3 rating in seven games.  The Saskatchewan native is considered a likely candidate to join Team Canada later this year for the World Junior Championships. • Blue Jackets send LaCosta to minors & release Matvichuk
  The Columbus Blue Jackets assigned goaltender Dan LaCosta to their American Hockey League affiliate and released defenseman Richard Matvichuk from his tryout contract on Monday.  The 35-year-old Matvichuk played for Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock with the Dallas Stars when they won the Stanley Cup in 1999. With 14 years and almost 800 games in the NHL, he was making $96 a day in training-camp pay to try to make the team after being out of the league a year ago. (Yahoo! Sports)

• Hurricanes sign LW LaCouture to 1-year deal
  The Carolina Hurricanes on Monday signed left wing Dan LaCouture to a one-year contract.  The deal will pay LaCouture $475,000 on the NHL level or $50,000 on the American Hockey League level, with a guarantee of at least $75,000 during the 2008-09 season. (Yahoo! Sports)
• Mark Bell placed on Waivers

• Rangers assign Wiikman to minors

• Capitals waive Laing, send Bourque to AHL
  The Washington Capitals set their season-opening roster Monday, sending 2007 first-round draft pick Karl Alzner and Chris Bourque to AHL club Hershey and waiving forward Quintin Laing.  Alzner was the No. 5 overall pick last year. The 20-year-old defenseman signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Washington in May. (Yahoo! Sports)
• Canucks acquire O’Brien & Ouellet from Lightning
  The Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Shane O’Brien and right wing Michel Ouellet from the Tampa Lightning on Monday for defenseman Lukas Krajicek and right wing Juraj Simek.  O’Brien, 25, recorded four goals and 21 points in 77 games with the Lightning last season. • RALEIGH NEWS & OBSERVER: Chip Alexander reports the Carolina Hurricanes management are considering their options which could include trading for a top line winger, although GM Jim Rutherford said he wouldn’t make a trade just for the sake of doing so.
• VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Jason Botchford reports Canucks GM Mike Gillis might wait until Wednesday’s waiver wire deadline to make his final cuts, not wishing to lose any more players via waivers after defenseman Norm McIver was plucked off waivers by the Anaheim Ducks.

• Selanne nets Hat Trick in Ducks win
  Teemu Selanne scored three goals to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 4-1 preseason victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday night.  Selanne, the Ducks’ all-time leading scorer, capped the hat trick with the game’s final goal with 17:14 left in the third period. (Yahoo! Sports)

League Updates:

• Oilers coach MacTavish ejected from game
  Edmonton Oilers coach Craig MacTavish was ejected in the second period of Friday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames for throwing a bloody towel on the ice.  After scoring a power-play goal with 90 seconds left in the second, Marc Pouliot engaged in a fight with Flames defenseman James Vandermeer. Once the officials restored order, MacTavish threw the towel and was ejected. (Yahoo! Sports)

• Wild sign D Falk
  The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Justin Falk to a contract on Friday.  Terms were not disclosed. (Yahoo! Sports)

  The Detroit Red Wings signed goalie Thomas McCollum to a three-year deal Friday. • Bobby Ryan: Name comes up in trade talks
  Ryan’s name was mentioned about in trade talks between the Ducks and Maple Leafs, according to the Orange County Register. (Yahoo! Sports)

• Senators owner Eugene Melnyk hopes to re-sign Daniel Alfredsson to a contract that’ll make him a “Senator for life”. Senators management will be meeting with Alfredsson’s agent tomorrow in Sweden to initiate negotiations.
• NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly still hopes the league and the KHL can reach an agreement on a binding arbitration hearing in Switzerland to resolve Alexander Radulov’s contract situation. 
• Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland suggests the recent injury to defenseman Chris Chelios could possibly push back his decision to trade a defenseman to free up cap space by a few weeks.
• Scouts from ” Vancouver, New Jersey, the Rangers, Ottawa, Florida, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Tampa Bay and Detroit” attending last night’s Blue Jackets-Sabres game. He speculates they might be there to take a look at defensemen Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and Marc Methot and also noted that forward Manny Malholtra played on the top line last night suggesting the Jackets might’ve been showcasing him.
• The agent for Chicago Blackhawks goalie Nikolai Khabibulin said the club has given him permission to talk to other NHL teams, and that he’s received interest in his client from “several clubs”. Grossman and Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon expressed hopes of getting Khabibulin’s situation resolved prior to the start of the season next week.
• The Anaheim Ducks announced they’ve demoted winger Bobby Ryan to their minor league affiliate while left wing Joakim Lindstrom has been claimed off waivers by the Chicago Blackhawks.
