Showing the true meaning of the word “trooper”, Sergey Gonchar reportedly played the final 2 rounds of the playoffs with a torn MCL. “Lots of guys were playing with bruises,” Gonchar said. Bruises are a far cry from a torn MCL. Kudos to you Gonchar, not get that MCL fixed up!
Bylsma Likes Back-To-Back Chances
Speaking like a coach who just won the Stanley Cup (shock horror), Dan Bylsma has said that he likes the idea of the Penguins coming back strong next year to win back-to-back Cups. “Pressure is something I don’t put a lot of stock in,” Bylsma said. “I think we can get back to the foundation and build again and try to do this again. It’s only one team a year that gets that opportunity and we’re going to try that next year. The challenge is you have to start all over again. You don’t get to start back on June 13.” That hasn’t been done since ‘97/’98 by the Detroit Red Wings. It’s just dripping in irony.
Crosby Dismisses Wings Snub Accusation
First of all, of course he dismisses it. You would have to be an idiot to actually admit it. After Kris Draper came out and accused Crosby of snubbing the Red Wings after their game 7 win, the attention went directly onto the young Penguins Captain. Crosby however wasn’t fazed at all. “I really don’t need to talk to anyone from Detroit about it,” Crosby said Sunday. “I made the attempt to go shake hands. I’ve been on that side of things, too, I know it’s not easy, waiting around. I just won the Stanley Cup, and I think I have the right to celebrate with my teammates.”
Malkin wins Conn Smythe, Joins Mario
He led the entire playoffs in points and had an impact on the game, and deservedly came away with the hardware. Evgeni Malkin was awared the Conn Smythe award for Playoff MVP. He joins Mario Lemieux in the long list of Conn Smythe winners.

As many of you know, each year TSN brings out Maggie the Monkey to make her picks for the playoffs. This year is no different. So who then, did Maggie pick? From TSN:
While the Detroit Red Wings were the most popular pick to be the Stanley Cup champion on the NHL on TSN’s Playoff Preview Show, there was some good news for two of the three Canadian teams in the post-season. The Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks were both picked as first round winners by Maggie the Monkey, TSN’s famous prognosticating primate.
The Montreal Canadiens, on the other hand, did not get a favourable spin of Maggie’s lucky wheel. She predicted the Boston Bruins would beat the Habs in their first round series.
Detroit was the pick for Stanley Cup champion for three of the six hockey experts assembled for the preview show. Pierre McGuire, Bob McKenzie and James Duthie all picked the Red Wings over the Boston Bruins in the Cup Final.
The Blues tie the game with Boston with a second left thanks to David Backes baseball style goal. Jackman blocks an empty net attempt late which sets up the goal in this MLK Day Thriller.
Christian Ehrhoff scores on the power play in the 2nd period to tie the game up at 3-3. The Sharks go on to win the game 6-5. *goal is at about the 1:50 mark*
The Duncan Keith and the Chicago Blackhawks attempted a comeback late in the game but it wasn’t to be. The Detroit Red Wings dominated the third period of the game to carry a 6-4 victory into the final buzzer.
Weathor major topic on eve of Winter Classic With only hours til the 2009 Winter Classic gets underway, the hot topic around the league is wether the weather will be good… or bad. Chris Johnston talks about this on Yahoo Sports.
Steve Mason continues shutout streak
Columbus Blue Jackets rookie netminder Steve Mason is making the NHL look easy. Mason backstopped the Blue Jackets to a 2-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks, his third consecutive shutout.
Injuries:
Patrice Bergeron (C – Boston) Placed on IR for concussion.
Rick DiPietro (G – NY Islanders) Re-injured groin.
Marian Gaborik (RW – Minnesota) Re-injured, day-to-day.
Simon Gagne (LW – Philadelphia) Shoulder Injury.
Transactions:
Vancouver Canucks acquired Netminder Jason Labarbara from the LA Kings for a 7th round draft pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Ross McKeon of Yahoo! Sports has released the weeks power rankings, this week based on the people between the pipes, the netminders. While it’s no surprise who leads the pack with regards to rankings, you might be surprised to ended up quite a way down the list.
The San Jose Sharks lead the pack with the Evgeni Nabokov / Brian Boucher combination. Boucher actually has a better GAA and SV% than Nabokov.
Coming in at #2 are the Boston Bruins who are led by the Tim Thomas / Manny Fernandez combination.
Third place belongs to the annual-cup-contenders, the Detroit Red Wings who have managed to get by with Chris Osgood actually being off his game. Backup Ty Conklin has been solid at his role.
The surprises?
For me, no bigger surprise than to see the Tampa Bay Lightning at #30. Mike Smith is the only reason that team hasn’t been beaten back into the 1700’s! Just ahead of the Lightning are the Islanders who, fair enough, have suffered from medical issues for starter Rick DiPietro. Backup Joey MacDonald has been spectacular and is starting to show he’s ready to challenge for DiPietro’s starter role. Right in the middle of the pack see’s the Vancouver Canucks sitting in spot #15. The Canucks have what is considered by many the best netminder in the league, Roberto Luongo.

Marty Robs Ozolinsh+Langs Goal(2)
A great sequence to seal the deal for Game 5. Over 7 minutes left and Paul Kariya(I think) finds Sandis Ozolinsh all alone but is stoned twice by Martin Brodeur! Then, it looks like Jamie Langenbrunner whiffs on a shot or pass and the puck is about to pass through the slot to the other side of the ice, but Brian Gionta awesomely dives to keep the puck in front and Langenbrunner is there to bury the puck past Jean-Sebastien Giguere to give the Devils the 6-3 lead! And in place of the \”Marty\’s Better!\” chant, we have the \”Overrated!\” chant! Clip is (c) ABC Sports/ESPN and the NHL and no copyright infringement is intended against them.
