Injury Updates:

  • Predators’ Legwand out with swollen knee
Legwand was held out of practice Tuesday and likely won’t play in Thursday’s preseason game against the Hurricanes because of swelling in his knee, the Nashville Tennessean reports. (sports.yahoo.com)

  • Flyers’ Downie leaves game
Philadelphia Flyers right wing Steve Downie left Wednesday’s 2-1 preseason victory over the Washington Capitals in the second period following a fight with Jay Beagle.  The 21-year-old Downie suffered a left knee strain after falling to the ice. He did not return to the contest and is expected to undergo an MRI on Thursday. (sports.yahoo.com)
  • Sykora back at Practice
Sykora (sore throat) returned to practice Wednesday after missing the first two workouts in Sweden, the Pens’ Web site reports. (sports.yahoo.com)

League Updates:

  • IIHF says Predators’ Radulov wrong to sign with Russian club
Russian forward Alexander Radulov was wrong to sign with a club in his home country while under contract with the Nashville Predators, hockey’s world governing body ruled Wednesday.  But the International Ice Hockey Federation said it had no legal basis to suspend him because there is no agreement in place to regulate international transfers. The ruling indicated Radulov had a binding agreement to serve the one year remaining on his Predators’ contract. (sports.yahoo.com)

  • Moose Jaw Warriors’ Joel Broda is named CHL player of the week
Moose Jaw Warriors forward Joel Broda was named the CHL player of the week on Wednesday.  Broda had five goals and six points in three games, all Warriors wins. He also had a plus-4 rating for the week.  The 18-year-old from Prince Albert, Sask., was a fifth-round selection of the Washington Capitals this year. (sports.yahoo.com)

Signings & Acquisitions:

  • Flyers sign Sbisa to entry-level contract
The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 6’2”, 190-pound defenseman Luca Sbisa to an entry-level contract, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. (nhl.com)

  • Lightning acquire D Sersen from Penguins
The Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday acquired the rights to defenseman Michal Sersen from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fifth-round selection in the 2009 draft.  The 6-1, 200-pound Sersen recorded nine goals and nine assists in 54 games with Czech Extraliga Hockey League champion HC Slovan Bratislava last season. Trades & Rumours:

From Spectorshockey.net:

  • Sources claim the Bruins have been active in the trade market for some time, “with some talk of a possible blockbuster deal involving top scorer Marc Savard - although the center has a no-trade contract and would have to agree to any swap.”

  • Insiders claim the Chicago Blackhawks are now targetting Michael Nylander of the Washington Capitals, with sources claiming they’ve made two offers to the Capitals for him. There was also talk of the Vancouver Canucks having interest in Blackhawks winger Martin Havlat but the ‘Hawks don’t appear willing to move him and the Canucks want to see Havlat play a sustained period without injury.
  • The Rangers have to make a decision on where winger Petr Prucha fits into their current roster or if he even fits in at all, noting that there isn’t much market value for Prucha at this time.
  • Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke isn’t done making roster moves to free up more cap space despite clearing $1.25 million yesterday by dealing Sean O’Donnell to the LA Kings.
  • The Blue Jackets have placed forward Mike York on waivers with the intent of demoting him to their minor league affiliate in Syracuse.
  • Tough guy forward David Koci is likely to survive the club’s roster cuts especially with Nick Tarnasky’s recent trade to Nashville. Cristodero also reports Michel Ouellet cleared waivers but wasn’t immediately assigned to the minors, suggesting a possible trade might be afoot.

Around the NHL - Tuesday 30 Sept

Posted by admin on 1st, 2008

Injury (formerly player) Updates:

  • Penguins’ Gonchar out 4 to 6 months
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will have arthroscopic surgery on his dislocated left shoulder Thursday and miss four to six months of the upcoming season. (sports.yahoo.com)

  • Sabres’ Gaustad to miss up to 3 weeks after surgery
Sabres center Paul Gaustad will miss up to the first three weeks of the regular season after he had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb Tuesday. (sports.yahoo.com)

NHL Updates:

  • Important season looms for Kelly & NHLPA
One of Paul Kelly’s first tasks in his first full season at the helm of the NHL Players’ Association might be his most important yet.  During visits with all 30 teams this fall, the NHLPA’s executive director will give players a thorough analysis of the collective bargaining agreement before they vote on whether they want to see that deal terminated two years early. (sports.yahoo.com)

Signings & Acquisitions:

  • O’Neill ends comeback attempt
Jeff O’Neill has ended his NHL comeback bid with the Carolina Hurricanes.  He notified the team of his decision after Sunday’s exhibition win over Philadelphia. Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford said it’s difficult for a player who sat out for a season to return to the league, but that O’Neill looked fine in training camp. (sports.yahoo.com)

  • Khabibulin clears waivers
Khabibulin cleared waivers on Tuesday, the Daily Herald reports. (sports.yahoo.com)

  • Ducks trade D O’Donnell to Kings
The Anaheim Ducks traded away a veteran defenseman for the second time in a week, dealing 36-year-old Sean O’Donnell to Los Angeles on Tuesday for a conditional draft pick.  O’Donnell played in all 82 of Anaheim’s games in 2007-08, scoring twice and adding seven assists for nine points with a plus-9 rating. He was 1-1-2 and plus-3 in the Ducks’ six-game playoff loss to Dallas. (nhl.com)

Trades & Rumours:

From Spectorshockey.net:

  • Steve Buffery reports the NY Rangers have reportedly issued “an ultimatum of sorts” to former Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin to make up his mind if he’ll play for them. The club is attempting to re-sign former Rangers winger Brendan Shanahan.

  • Chris Stevenson reports further on Daniel Alfredsson’s contract status. “(I)f Alfredsson plays 70 games and gets at least 70 points this season, he has the option to accept $3.8 million (all terms US) for next season or declare himself an unrestricted free agent”, writes Stevenson, adding that if Alfredsson doesn’t hit that “70-70″ mark, the Senators keep him for next season at $3.8 million, but the Sens don’t want to take a chance that he could be come a UFA next summer. Talks between Senators GM Bryan Murray and agent JP Barry are in the preliminary stage.
  • Erik Erlendsson reports the Lightning likely aren’t done cutting payroll after trading Nick Tarnasky and waiving Michel Ouellet, suggesting David Koci, Jason Ward and Ryan Craig are the bubble players. Erlendsson guesses Koci could be the odd man out unless a trade develops over the next 72 hours.
