- Avangard Omsk returns to ice after Cherepanov death
The Avangard Omsk hockey team on Monday played its first Kontinental Hockey League game since the death of promising winger Alexei Cherepanov.
With Cherepanov’s parents in attendance, captain Alexander Svitov and alternates Anton Kuryanov and Alexander Popov skated with Cherepanov’s jersey No. 7 before it was raised to the rafters. An announcement was made that his No. 7 will never be worn again.
“It was tough on those three guys,” Omsk coach Wayne Fleming told TSN of Canada on Monday. “They didn’t have a lot of time to wipe their tears before the puck drop and away they went. And there was no warmup music at all. There was no talking among the players as both teams went about their warmup rituals and practice drills.”

- Avery returns to the Garden
Sean Avery hurried out of Madison Square Garden nearly as quickly as he left the New York Rangers as a free agent.

to dinner.”
Avery made his presence felt upon his return to Manhattan after 1
1/2 seasons of being the resident Rangers pest. He didn’t show up on
the scoresheet Monday, but he walked out into the New York nightlife he
relishes after he and the Dallas Stars skated off with a 2-1 victory.

Breaking News:
- Investigator: Hockey player had heart problems
Alexei Cherepanov had heart problems and probably should not have been allowed to play in a game in which he collapsed and died, a regional investigator suggested Tuesday.
Yulia Zhukova said Cherepanov, who died Monday playing for Avangard Omsk in a Continental Hockey League game outside of Moscow, apparently had chronic ischemia—a medical condition when not enough blood gets to the heart or other organs.
“Checks will be conducted to clarify, in particular, why the sportsman with such an illness went onto the ice,” Zhukova said. (Read the full article)

Trades & Rumours:
From spectorshockey.net (click to view the full report):
- TIMES ONLINE.COM: Mark Madden reports the Pittsburgh Penguins lack quality wingers for Sidney Crosby’s line and suggests Penguins management should shop center Jordan Staal “sooner, not later”. Madden raises the possibility of Staal perhaps seeing if he’ll receive a lucrative, unmatchable offer sheet from a rival club where he can play as a center rather than a winger, and suggests currently there’s “zero indication” that Staal will re-sign prior to next summer with the Penguins.
- VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Jason Botchford reports there’s been a lull in negotiations between Canucks GM Mike Gillis and the agent for the Sedin twins. They are seeking a “no-trade” clause in their new contracts but Botchford suggests they might be willing to give Gillis some wiggle room by seeking a “no-separation” clause, meaning if they’re to be traded they’d be dealt together to the same team. Botchford also reported the Canucks lost blueline speed when Kevin Bieksa went down to a recent injury, forcing them to dress slower defensemen Shane O’Brien and Rob Davison. “When the back end is completely healthy, it’s unlikely both will play in the same game with any degree of regularity” writes Botchford, adding, “So much for those who want Kevin Bieksa traded.”
- TORONTO SUN: reports Maple Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher denies internet rumors claiming he’s been talking with the Phoenix Coyotes about acquiring first round picks or that defenseman Ian White might be dealt to the Coyotes.
- DENVER POST: Terry Frei reports Colorado Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj must step up his performance to sew up the starting goaltender role with the club. Frei writes the Avs have little choice but to ride out Budaj for a long as possible in part because of their public committment to him and the reality that backup Andrew Raycroft would have to flash back five years to retreive the form of his only elite NHL season. Frei raises the possibility of a trade and the name of Chicago Blackhawks goalie Nikolai Khabibulin.

Nashville Predators center Jason Arnott left in the third period of Monday’s 3-2 shootout victory over the Chicago Blackhawks with a hand injury. Sports)
- Flyers name Barber scouting consultant
The Philadelphia Flyers on Monday welcomed a familiar face back to the franchise. The Flyers named Hall of Fame player and former coach Bill Barber as a scouting consultant. “It’s great to come back home where I belong,” said Barber, who won two Stanley Cups with the team in 1974 and 1975.. “I spent 30 memorable years with the Flyers organization and personally, everything was great. I had great experiences and a great association with the Flyers. (Yahoo! Sports)

Alberts, 27, appeared in 35 regular season games for the Bruins last season, recording two assists and 39 penalty minutes. He was also scoreless in two playoff games for Boston. “Andrew is a big, competitive defenseman and he skates well,” general manager Paul Holmgren said. “He will bring experience and depth to our team.” (Yahoo! - MINNEAPOLIS STAR-TRIBUNE: Michael Russo reports Gaborik could become “this season’s Marian Hossa”, suggesting the Wild could indeed trade the talented but injury-prone winger if they’re unable to reach an agreement on a new contract. One thing for sure: These Internet rumors that Gaborik wants to play in Edmonton are as laughable as Sean Avery jumping up and down in front of Martin Brodeur”, reports Russo.
