The NHL vowed to find an owner that will keep the Phoenix Coyotes where they are Monday night after an Arizona bankruptcy judge rejected Jim Balsillie's bold bid to buy the insolvent team and move it to Hamilton.
Judge Redfield T. Baum made his highly anticipated decision public earlier in the evening, saying in a 21-page ruling that there wasn't enough time to deal with all the unresolved issues raised by the unprecedented case.
That prompted Balsillie to offer the NHL an olive branch and propose to work with it in attempt to find "an appropriate" relocation fee to bring the club north through mediation.
But buoyed by the judgment, the league says it plans to help a future owner make the Coyotes viable in Glendale, and its claims that four parties have expressed an interest in operating the team there will now be put to the test.
"We are confident that we will be able to find such a buyer for the Coyotes," deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement, "and that the claims of legitimate creditors will be addressed."

Ron Wilson will have a few familiar faces when he takes the bench behind the U.S. Men's National Team later this month.
Toronto Maple Leafs' Jason Blake and Lee Stempniak, Ottawa Senators Nick Foligno and Ryan Shannon and Edmonton Oilers Patrick O'Sullivan were among the first 19 players named to the U.S. Men's National Team that will compete at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship in Berne and Zurich-Kloten, Switzerland.
The Americans initial list boasts nine players who have previously played in the IIHF Men's World Championship, including Blake, Stempniak, and O'Sullivan, as well as defensemen Keith Ballard (Florida Panthers), Jack Johnson (Los Angeles Kings), and Ryan Suter (Nashville Predators), forwards Dustin Brown (Los Angeles Kings), Drew Stafford (Buffalo Sabres), and goaltender Robert Esche, who is currently playing for the KHL's SKA St. Petersburg.

BOSTON (AP)—Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Hunwick had his spleen removed Saturday but has not been ruled out of the NHL playoffs.
The surgery was done Saturday afternoon, about 2 1/2 hours after Hunwick felt increased pain while the team was together for its morning skate before that night’s second game against the Montreal Canadiens.
“He’s comfortable and he’s recovering in his room” at Massachusetts General Hospital, Bruins team physician Dr. Peter Asnis said before the game. “Spirits are high, feels well, and he’ll be there for a couple of days.”

Craig MacTavish fired as Edmonton Oilers coach |

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP)—This was starting to look all too familiar to the Oilers. The NHL playoffs were starting, and Edmonton was done for the season.
Coach Craig MacTavish paid the price.
He was fired Wednesday after the Oilers failed to make the playoffs for the third straight year. The dismissal came on the same day the NHL postseason began, and general manager Steve Tambellini said the team needed a fresh look behind the bench.
“He gave everything he possibly could to help this team get better,” Tambellini said during a news conference. “But we both agree that it is time for a change.”
The Oilers finished 11th in the Western Conference with a record of 38-35-9 for 85 points. This was the fifth time in seven seasons they have not reached the playoffs.
